Yonkers IB Day: A Decades-Old Cross-Institution Information Literacy Program (Rm 309)
Monday April 21, 2025 3:15pm - 4:15pm CDT
For over 20 years, librarians from the Sarah Lawrence College Library and the Yonkers Public Library have worked to support international baccalaureate (IB) students at Yonkers High School--a highly diverse urban school with limited resources--through two day-long research skills programs each academic year. Across the years, through many staffing changes, and through a pandemic, the initiative not only persists but continues to develop and grow. In this session we will provide a brief overview of the program and its history, share lessons learned and reasons for success, as well explore some of the theoretical underpinnings of the program. Attendees will walk away with and understanding of how the academic and public librarians work with public school teachers and leverage their respective expertise to support these students, how to maintain a successful partnership, and the tools to design and implement cross-institution information literacy initiatives.
