Libraries can position themselves as leaders in
civic engagement by involving patrons in safe, non-partisan conversations about the timely and relevant subjects that matter most to our communities. This presentation will equip attendees with tools and examples to champion community-driven
civic engagement initiatives, while strengthening the bonds between libraries and the communities they serve.
Learn from several case studies that provided patrons with opportunities to become more proficient with
civics so they can fully engage with local, state and federal elections and governing bodies. Explore a year-long Political Scientist in Residence project that engaged patrons in the political process during a highly divisive election cycle. Learn how the same approach was used to allow patrons to show support for victims of gun violence, understand book challenges, and explore the importance of diverse representation on governing boards.
Attendees will learn strategies for overcoming discomfort in facilitating similar events at their libraries, including:
- Strategies for mobilizing existing networks of community leaders
- Practical approaches for facilitating impactful civic engagement events
- Insight into fostering a culture of intellectual freedom and inclusivity within library spaces.
